WEEKLY MOVIE GUIDE (what to watch and what to miss in Cinema)

ROCKSTAR     (soulful but drifts)
Genre                  Romance/Drama
Release Date       11th November
Director               Imtiaz Ali
Duration              150 minutes
Cast                    Ranbir Kapoor,Nargis Fakiri,Shammi Kapoor
Pluses                 Ranbir's best performance till date, beautifully shot, music rocks('Sadda Haq' and 'Katiya Karoon')
Minuses              Nargis is hopeless, screenplay is uneven, music is not chart buster in masses and that too badly placed in screenplay
Verdict               2.5/5 (watch it if you want to witness a good impactful cinema with brilliant performance)
BOX OFFICE PREDICTION It will have a good weekend of around 32 cr nett but can not sustain as it gets too serious in 2nd half and end is too philosophical for masses

No doubt it is the best performance of Ranbir Kapoor till date and he excels in almost all the shades of his characters- be it 'haryanavi jaat boy' in beginning or a rockstar Jordan or a hopeless lover. He carries the film on his shoulder which is a great sign for his future.
Imtiaz Ali starts with a brilliant idea with 'sufi' undercurrent but loses the grip after initial 45 minutes.Couple meet several times and that too audience never get to know when they fall in love as Ranbir keeps fooling around till very end.
The biggest let down is Nargis Fakiri, the leading lady who is as plastic as Katrina was in early days and she  irritates throughout.Late Shammi Kapoor looks good in cameo.
Cinematography by Anil Mehta is top notch but real bright sopt is Rahman's music where he proves his mastery again through variety of songs - classical, romantic, qawalli, rock but here again Imtiaz falters to extract chart buster music from him.Songs are very badly paced.
Screenplay is so uneven that you will be reminded of potholes in Indian road,it takes a plunge and again starts drifting.Second half is boring and tough to sit through (the 'disease angle' was terrible).
All in all a very soulful idea messed up with uninspiring screenplay and formula driven direction. The first misadventure from Mr. Ali and you should really feel bad for Ranbir as he puts all his sincerity and intensity but writers let him down.Better luck next time!
